- Khalil Madyun is an up & coming singer/songwriter, originally from Boston, who has recently made New York his home. As a youngster growing up, music was always around him: the shows and concerts that came to the theater where his mother worked, the musical theater productions his father wrote or the songs and poetry he performed in elementary school with his classmates. When he reached high school, he became a member of the high school chorus, Southeast District Chorus, All State Chorus, and SEMSBA chorus. At age 15, Khalil asked for a keyboard for his birthday. The day he received it, he stayed up all night writing his first song. From that point, music became the focal point of his life. He studied voice at the Boston Conservatory Musical Theater Youth Program. In 2000 and 2001, Khalil attended the Berklee 5-week summer program and the Berklee City music program during the school year in a quest to enhance his technical skills and hone his craft. During his time in those programs he developed a strong foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge which compliments his natural born talent. Through his participation in these programs, he received a full tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music. While attending Berklee he studied voice with Armstead Christian (writer and background vocalist for Will Downing, Najee), Jeff Ramsey (background vocalist for Maxwell, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Al Jarreau), and vocal ensemble instruction with Walter Beasley. Khalil also performed as a background singer at Berklee’s 20th Anniverary Annual Singer’s Showcase. Among the artists he sung for was Susan Tedeschi. Before graduating, he taught piano lab and voice lessons to city music high school students. He also tutored music theory to his fellow college classmates. In 2004, Khalil graduated from Berklee College of Music with a a bachelor’s degree in professional music concentrating in voice and songwriting. His songwriting awards began while he was in high school, and continued throughout his college years. In November 2004, Khalil performed in the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s 52nd New Writers Showcase. His song “How Many Ways” is featured on the 2005 Compilation CD “The Best of the Songwriters Hall of Fame New Writers Showcase, Vol. 3”. In New York Khalil has performed at the Triad Theater, the Cutting Room, the CBGB’s Downstairs lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, and the Craig Haft’s Songwriter’s Soundstage. - Maybe you heard her and the band rocking Greenwich Village. Or you wandered into a Brooklyn café to find her enchanting the crowd with just voice and guitar. Or lush vocals and clever lyrics on the airwaves gripped you: "Who is that?" Who, indeed. If there were a simple answer, singer/songwriter Nicole Collins – an anti-cliché mélange of rock/pop, soul and folk – might not be the fount of raw introspection she is. "It’s true, I helped you build this pedestal I’m stranded on," she declares in her fiery anthem "Just Listen." "And it’s true, my calls for help wore the veil of nonchalance ..." Needless to say, hers is no simple story. It begins with impromptu renditions of Top 40 hits as soon as she could speak. While strangers were amused and impressed by her spot-on delivery, her parents learned that kids also sing the darnedest things: "Spank me, whoop me, let me come back home," à la Ray Parker Jr., for example. By age 10, she was making waves in talent shows, musicals and choirs – and training as a violist. The love affair was crystallized in high school, as she traveled the nation as an actress and songstress in the play "Carved in Stone," discovering the power of her voice on the masses. She began early in the craft of songwriting, too, tackling everything from love to life’s trials, which she already knew well: Raised in a military family on the move – and attending 11 schools as a child – Nicole learned the hard way that stability was fleeting, and trust too expensive. In writing she explored these themes, finding solace, even if answers were few. Nicole followed her dream to New York, where she quickly found her niche ("pop/rock with soul," she calls it) and released her self-produced debut, "Leave It Behind," in 2004. Since then, she’s left her mark on stages from the New York area – The Bitter End, Rockwood Music Hall and Central Park among them – to the South and Midwest and beyond. Along the way, she’s taken tunes to the national airwaves, Internet radio, and TV. Since 2006, she’s been taking Europe by storm, traveling to Germany, France, Spain, and Denmark, where she performed at Tivoli Gardens (capacity 3000+). NC also released her new album, "Not This Time," in 2006, rising to the next level with polished arrangements to set off her stunning voice and intensely personal lyrics: "The sun has come out again, I’m learning to laugh again, and everyone’s stopped asking if I’m all right," she grieves in a soul-baring ballad. Her infectious [music] finds a middle ground between New York’s homey downtown clubs and the polish of Top 40 radio." - Relix Magazine Jumping from guitar to piano and back, Amanda delivers songs that are tastefully built around passion and melody. Nurtured by influences such as Joni Mitchell and Carole King, her introspective music ranges from sultry blues inspired love songs to power-driven pop hits, all carried by her emotional vocal performances. Her song “Everything Lies” off of her second EP, “Between You & Me” was featured on season 3 of MTV’s “The Hills.” Along with her first EP, “Wait”, Amanda has sold over 2,000 copies and is in radio rotation from the Northeast to Hawaii. Surrounded by a love of music at an early age, Amanda trained as a classical violinist from the age of four. At the age of 13, she broadened her focus by learning guitar and piano, and began developing her vocal skills with the nationally recognized Elm City Girls Choir. Armed with years of classical training and non-classical influences, Amanda eventually found a personal balance in singing/songwriting. Amanda is currently working on a third, full-length release with producer Ritchie Rubini, while continuing to perform at a variety of venues in the Northeast. - Finger-style guitar was the final, enduring approach Akron, Ohio’s M. Scott Horn embraced in songwriting and performance as a solo artist. Taking a pass on Jorma Kaukonen’s (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) “Fur Peace Ranch” guitar camp its first year would have prevented a subversive but unique encounter. Six days of Roy Bookbinder intoxicating the students out on the deck, through sheer force of personality as much as through guitar technique, was more like an awakening than instruction. Writing off his performance at a bar in town as mediocre added an element of surprise one evening for Scott. At a distance from the others, Jorma stressed the enviable luck of having a unique singing voice, strongly suggesting it reason enough for Scott to pursue music seriously. Both encounters shoved Scott’s attention towards forging an identity based on performance. He made haste in the direction of his teachers’ influences: Robert Johnson, Robert Pete Williams, Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller and others. Learning their technique undeniably deepened the ability to draw out the best in other influences: Townes Van Zandt, Nick Drake, Guy Clark, Bob Dylan, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Dirty Linen and others. Scott released Fake as the Blue (2006) a few years later, his first effort. All tracks are Scott on vocal and guitar(s), with Akron’s Jim Ballard doing keyboard work on two. The cd is currently featured for promotion from May 2006 - May 2007 in Relix and No Depression music fan magazines. Recent performances have included an appearance at the Cornelia Street Café in Manhattan, the Night and Day Restaurant in Brooklyn, NY, and the High Noon Saloon in Madison, Wisconsin, the latter as a battle-of-the-bands contestant in Loyal Family Productions’ nationwide “Battlerusa.” Scott will be performing in venues in Cleveland and submitting to those in Columbus, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Toledo, Ann Arbor, Chicago, and others. Seth Glier joins the rank of artists with such an emergence. - Gretchen Witt grew up aahwl-sweet-n-peachy in the nice countryside of Ohio before moving at age 18 to the barbarous streets of New York City where she soon thereafter developed culture shock. It’s been a great shock. She graduated from N.Y.U.’s Tisch School of the Arts, an education during which she scribbled lots of rhymes (where she should’ve scribbled exam notes) on the corners of her classroom notebooks. She has studied classical piano & voice for years, has recently taken up the guitar, and has sung under her breath (to the annoyance of nearby others) all of her life. No one has yet, since this joyous departure into song-writing, been able to pull her away from the strings, the keys, or lyric-inspiring pencil set. The lyrics of each song have been widely agreed upon as the cornerstone of her work. Her vocal style is frequently compared to that of Alison Krauss, Neko Case, Patty Griffin, Norah Jones and Natalie Merchant, however the music remains firmly unique. Gretchen was spotlighted in the recent film Idolette, a documentary profiling the lives of female singer/songwriters. Her music has also been featured on a variety of radio stations. Her live shows occur regularly in New York City at venues such as The Living Room, Makor, Pianos, The Bitter End, The Knitting Factory, and The Cutting Room. She also has played well-known national festivals such as the NEMO Festival in Boston, MA (her showcase was held at Club Passim) and The Dewey Beach Americana Festival in Dewey Beach, Delaware. Recently, she was selected as a New Folk Finalist in The Kerrville Folk Festival (Kerrville, TX) as well as a Troubadour in the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s Troubadour Competition (Telluride, CO). Gretchen is the recipient of two Honorable Mentions (for songs "Consequence" and "Soft Spot") from the 2006 MidAtlantic Song Contest. Reviewers have offered glowing feedback, including quips such as the following from Discovering Artists; "Whatever she does, she should keep on doing it. This is acoustic rock magic...is there anything this woman can’t do musically? I doubt it." - One day when he was a child in New York City Anton put his ear against a speaker in a dark apartment on the west side and went into a trance. He had a long dream. When he woke up twenty years later his heart was permanently broken, but in a good way. Trying to make a movie out of the turbulence in his mind, he found himself writing songs instead, songs some have described as sounding like Bryan Ferry, some as sounding like John Lennon, and some as sounding like a session of great sex during psychoanalysis. His first CD, A Sentimental Education, has been described by listeners in the US and Europe as Lush, Dreamy, Mesmerizing, Groovy, Catchy, and Gorgeous. - Brian Jarvis began creating music during a time when acoustic guitars ruled “pop radio”. The airways were filled with the music of artists such as Dave Matthews, David Gray and Guster, and by listening to their songs, Brian fell in love with the sound of acoustic guitar. It became his instrument of choice, and an integral part of his song writing. In his own words, describing the appeal of the instrument, Brian says, “There is no where to run and hide while playing an acoustic guitar; it flaunts your successes and advertises your mistakes.” Relying on his keen ear for melodies, and his strong sense of rhythm, Brian uses his life experiences to create music that is edgier than the traditional singer/songwriter fare. He expresses his emotions with bright, catchy melodies which blend nicely with pop hooks, and intricate guitar riffs and arrangements. “I write songs that are meant for a full band, but that don’t lose their appeal when done with just an acoustic [guitar]. I want to create songs that people can sing back after one listen, but it is equally important to me that my music is palatable without sacrificing any musical integrity.” Brian was the main songwriter in a band named Verona in 2000. The band had some success, sharing bills with artists such as John Entwistle of the Who, The Samples, and Virgin Recording artists Renata. But success was not enough to keep Verona alive, and after several band members came and went, Verona disappeared. The break up of the band discouraged Brian, and his passion for pursuing a music career wavered. He had worked hard for the success that had been achieved, and the idea of moving forward as a solo artist was daunting. In 2006 the Brian Jarvis Band was born. Dan Prindle of the regional band Rane signed on as bass and cello player. Long time friend Bryan Kelly (Verona, Rane, Moller) agreed to bring his unique sound to the drums of BJB. Brian also sought the help of up and coming singer/songwriter Anna Brewer, and lead guitarist Brian Moroney. Together, the five would prove to be an impressive team. In 2006 Brian Jarvis shared bills with many renowned artists including Chad Perrone, The Alternate Routes and The Samples. - Put simply, a Frank Viele show is a thinking man’s party where all the thoughts are good ones and, even better, you can dance to them. I’ve seen Frank Viele and The Manhattan Project twice now and, both shows, no one in the audience needed to be told to get up and dance; dancing is just the natural human reaction to the music coming from the stage. Viele’s tunes are so alive, the melodic and intricate vocal lines so engaging, they open a door for an audience to dance on in, have a dialogue with the band, and become quickly en rapt as they hear a story or two. And that’s what the songs are, "stories", stories in the best sense: small scenarios of emotional truth told through music. When I heard Viele’s first single off his ’Blue Roses For Two’ EP, ’Bein’ Lonely Together’, I was impressed (as were others...the song peaked at 16 on the Top 100 Underground Singles Chart and can be heard all along the east coast on college radio, Rhapsody Radio and Sirius Radio) and I still am, but the live shows make the word ’impressed’ a poor poor term indeed to describe the experience of Viele’s music. Viele began playing at age three, teaching himself the theme songs to his favorite television shows on his grandmother’s piano and you can tell, watching him, that the man’s a natural performer, been playing to the crowd all his life. He moved on from TV theme songs to making the piano sing the melodies of Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel and then moved from piano to guitar, falling in love with Jazz music at a Berklee College of Music Summer Session. With the guitar came a different set of musical icons to model: Dave Matthews and Dylan, then Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, George Benson and Eric Krasno. To see Viele on stage, or to listen to his first record, you know you are in the presence of someone who knows his instrument, who knows what that instrument can do and, uncannily, who has that musician’s sixth sense of knowing what it is an audience needs to hear, and how it should be phrased. From the age of three on there’s no doubt Frank Viele has learned well from his musical mentors. It is no surprise to learn that Viele has, already in his young career, shared the stage with acts the calibre of The Spin Doctors, Stephen Kellog & The Sixers, Keller Williams, Nine Days and Marc Broussard; he seems naturally a part of the music world and entirely at home on the stage. Frank Viele shows extraordinary skill at entertaining any crowd, large or small, whatever their musical orientation, and sending every member of the audience out of the club or down the sidewalk singing songs in their heads and dancing to the rhythm of memory. Seth Glier joins the rank of artists with such an emergence. This singer/songwriter/pianist, born and raised in rural Western Massachusetts, delivers an organic performance rich in emotion and intellect. Glier’s blend of smooth folk and bluesy soul is a sound all his own. Sharing the stage with the like of John Mayer, Shemekia Copeland, and Martin Sexton, Glier’s accomplishments far surpass his age. He has sold thousands of records and has performed hundreds of shows throughout the east coast including three sold-out nights at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton Mass, to performing for over 25,000 people on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Receiving a scholarship in songwriting from Berklee College of Music, his thought provoking lyrics have been recognized by Lizz Wright, Peter Mulvey, and folk super-group Redbird. Seth’s highly anticipated sophomore release, Space (2005), has been a hit among listeners. Seth’s newest album, Sojourn, will be released in June of 2007 and is already creating buzz. Produced by Michael Gregory (Mick Jaggar, Carlos Santana, Steve Winwood) and engineer by Angelo Qualia (Luther Vandross, Madonna), Sojourn leads the listener down the trail of love both lost and found, growth from vulnerability, and spirituality in a frivolous world. Glier is also joined by the Hammond B3 talents of recording veteran Mitch Chakour (James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, Richie Havens), saxophonist Joe Nerney (Stevie Wonder), guitarist Joe Boyle (Frank Manzi), and bassist Nick Cressotti who all complement Glier’s spacious breathtaking sound.
