Art Under The Stars In Shelburne Falls

On Saturday, November 6th, from 5-8 pm,*Art Under the Stars* shoes will lead you on an Art Walk in Shelburne Falls. Stroll across the Deerfield River and through dozens of shops, galleries and restaurants for an evening of new exhibits, receptions with artists, studio demonstrations, interactive art, and delicious treats. Gaze out over Salmon Falls and the glacial potholes, walk the Bridge of Flowers, ride a historic trolley under the stars in this jewel of an artisans village. *Art Under the Stars* is free to the public and there will be plenty to do and see. If you haven’t visited Shelburne Falls yet this year, *Art Under the Stars* is the time to go.

Begin the evening early, at 4:00 pm at the Shelburne Falls Senior Center for the unveiling of the mosaic project by Cynthia Fisher and local students. This extraordinary community-wide endeavor to celebrate the beauty of our rural area, created 10 richly designed mosaic murals that represent the hilltowns surrounding Shelburne Falls: Ashfield, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Conway, Hawley, Heath, Plainfield, Rowe and Shelburne. Two larger panels depicting the American Indians and the Deerfield River environment were also created.
*Art Under the Stars* introduces ”Desert Jewels: The Southwest in Beads, Fiber and Paint”, featuring bead woven jewelry by Sally Chaffee, fiber art clothing and wall hangings by Barbara Aikin and, landscape paintings and prints by Louise Minks at the Shelburne Arts Cooperative . Wine, cheese and sparkling cider will be served while you enjoy all the shop has to offer. Boswell Books will host local artist/illustrator Suzanne Conway who will display matted prints and cards of her featured work. Award winning picture framer Jo-Anne Sherburne is hosting “The Art of Picture Framing” which will include a variety of examples showing interesting techniques of framing as well as a selection of “talking portraits” (mirrors, to us muggles). Also featured will be a selection of original paintings, priced for the time, that are sure to lend comfort and cheer to the sole: all to be seen at JH Sherburne Fine Art Portraits and Framing. Grow Gallery will host an exclusive trunk show of leather work by local artists Hayward and Andrea Santos who will be on site to talk about their work and accept custom orders. These artists have been producing quality sheepskin products for nearly three decades and specialize in custom tailed coats, hats and scarves. If style, quality and warmth this winter is what you crave, this is an event not to be missed!

Walk to A Colorful Affair to see a stained glass studio and much, much more. As you visit the newly renovated firehouse behind Buckland Town Hall you will discover the artwork of Nancy Katz and the craftsmanship of Mark Liebowitz, the couple who created Memorial Hall’s stained glass transom. Learn about this traditional art form and more! Enter the Caroline Christie Gallery for “gifts from the sky”: still life paintings of feathers in oil and watercolor. Greenfield Coop/McCuskers Market will feature Lisa M. Henry, a Pioneer Valley artist working in charcoal, graphite and watercolor. Lisa offers a realistic approach to the focal point striving for dynamic compositions revealing mystery and drama. Lisa will be presenting her work in the store cafĂ© for all to see. At the Young and Constantin Gallery featured artists Jeff Grader and Jeremy Sinkus will be greeting visitors. Jeff will be in the gallery signing his recent picture book “Change” and introducing his new illustrated line of holiday cards and offering art prints from his Warped Whimsy collection. Holder of the Stone glass studio will be open and Jeremy will be on hand to demonstrate how he makes his intricate land and sea creations and discuss his work. The Studio and Gallery will collaborate with food, wine, music and, of course, their artistically decorated shoes.

The Community Exhibit about Walking will continue at the Art Garden which includes twenty-seven community members with 45 pieces, one that is interactive and the Shelburne Falls Trolley has offered to run as a shuttle for people attending this presentation. Though free, donations for the trolley ride are greatly appreciated! There will be refreshments and opportunities to play with art materials and music. Vavstuga Swedish Weaving will have ongoing demonstrations as well as store features such as; Glimakra weaving equipment, exquisite Swedish cotton, linen and wool yarns, books and hand woven goods.   If you have considered an attempt at weaving, this is the place for you! And, at Molly Cantor Potter there will be an exhibition of teapots, cups, sugar and creamers, trays and sculpture featuring eight ceramic artists focusing on the ritual of tea. Tea will be served at a reception during the art walk.

Venture up the hill to Salmon Falls Artisans Showroom where they will celebrate the evening with Double Edge Theater from 5-7 pm in the showroom. Double Edge Theater offers stilt walking, gypsy music, and completely original theater. Enjoy the work of more than 75 regional artists and craftspeople who show at the gallery. Be sure to visit Stillwater Porcelain for a 10% discount on gallery purchases for this evening only! Pothole Pictures, located in Memorial Hall will present a screening of the wonderful 1955 musical comedy Guys and Dolls starring Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons. Showtime is at 7:30 giving the perfect opportunity to visit local shops and galleries, have dinner in one of the town’s fine eateries and make it to the theater in time for the show. Although the art walk is free, there is an admission for the show.

Shelburne Falls with a ride on a trolley are both worth a trip from anywhere in New England. Shelburne Falls was itself named “one of the prettiest small towns in New England” and is full of artisan shops, galleries, restaurants and attractions such as the historic Bridge of Flowers and the Glacial Potholes of the Deerfield River. Shelburne Falls is only two hours from Boston and 45 minutes from Springfield on Route 2 heading west to the Berkshires.
