New Member Profile - HHR Paine Photography

Historic Shelburne home is backdrop for creative portraiture

(4/6/09) “One of the things that’s most appealing about Shelburne Falls is that the village offers a unique sense of community,” says photographer and new SFABA member Harriet Paine of HHR Paine Photography.

photo_hhrpainehouse.jpgHer studio is in a remarkable location in a beautifully renovated 1868 Gothic Revival Shelburne Falls home. She has been lighting, positioning and shooting and subjects since around 1985. In good weather, Paine can often be seen photographing subjects against the background of her historic home and grounds. Her studio is situated in the carriage house, on two landscaped acres with a pond and gardens ideal for environmental portraiture.

Paine's fine photography is noted for her craftsmanship and artistry. Her subjects include portraits (families, children, high school seniors), weddings, groups (reunions, special occasions, proms), corporate photography, sports teams, dancers, as well as pets. She is regionally recognized for her exceptional personal service.

Paine is a graduate of Wheaton College in art history; has a Master of Arts from the University of Massachusetts in art education; and is a graduate of the Hallmark Institute of Photography where she specialized in portraiture and received the Most Professional Portfolio Award. Paine combines her background in both art and photography in her portraits.

Paine’s home was once owned by Linus and Catherine Yale, of the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company, and later by Henry S. Patch, who with his father ran the successful 79-year Patch Photography Studio in the village. The home, buildings and grounds have been painstakingly restored by Paine.

And, with a twinkle in her eye, Paine quotes Lewis Hine, "If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't need to lug around a camera."
