New Recycling Barrels Installed in Town

Recycling Containers First in Franklin County

(9/10/09) The Village of Shelburne Falls, which includes the towns of Shelburne and Buckland, are the first towns in Franklin County to provide recycling containers on the street.

Earlier this year the Shelburne Falls Area Business Association conducted a survey of local businesses to determine if there was a need to address trash and recycling concerns. One of the comments outlined the need for recycling containers throughout the village.

“It only makes sense for a community that attracts nearly 25,000 visitors a year to our area to be responsible and set the example by providing recycling containers”, says Executive Director Mary Vilbon of the Shelburne Falls Area Business Association. Amy Donovan of Franklin County Solid Waste District worked closely with Vilbon to determine the adequate number of containers and assisted in the purchasing of the containers through Mass Cor where the containers are made by inmates. Both Select Boards from Buckland and Shelburne agreed to purchase two containers each, the Shelburne Falls Area Partnership purchased one, and McCuskers Market purchased one, for a total of six containers. After the containers were installed with a very positive response from visitors and residents, local Attorney Kate Downes graciously made a donation to the SFABA to purchase one additional container.
