Artist Maureen Moore is always on alert for subjects to paint. About a year ago, when visiting friends in California, Maureen went with them to the famed San Diego Zoo. As they toured the zoo, the guide repeatedly identified species that were in danger of disappearing from the wild. Amazed by how many there were and impressed by their beauty, she realized they were wonderful artistic subjects and their plight was worthy of recognition. In Moore’s own words:

“Researching the decline of the wild has been aesthetically rewarding, but philosophically and politically sobering. So, besides honoring the beauty of the species exhibited here, I also hope to inspire viewers to support efforts to protect the remaining Wilderness. The good news of this story is we are making strides in conserving the habitats our wild species depend on. An example is right here in the Connecticut River watershed, where the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge provides 36,000 acres of protected habitat from Connecticut to Canada for many of the species in this exhibit. So I will donate ten percent of sales to this very worthy Refuge.”

Maureen is a retired history professor and came late but enthusiastically to the brilliancy of watercolor and acrylic paints. She appreciates her good fortune in receiving worthy tutelage and the example of exceptionally talented local artists, such as Walt Cudnohofsky, Paula Gottlieb, Louise Minks, and fellow members of the Deerfield Valley Art Association. She has also studied with Tom Tiedmand, Jan LaFazio and others when living in California. Her work is exhibited locally and also online at Fine Art America, Zazzle, and Pinterest.

Moore’s exhibit can be seen March 2 – April 29, with a reception on Saturday, March 3, 4-6pm. Music by Loren Feinstein. Loren is a multi-instrumentalist musician with over 20 years of experience playing in many different styles, with cultural influences from all over the world.
