Get your creative juices flowing in this time of 'social distancing' - The Colrain Historical Society's Friends of the Arthur A. Smith Covered Bridge announces the Totes and Tees Design Contest!

Submit original artwork featuring our iconic covered bridge and compete for the $250 prize plus your winning design printed on tee shirts and reusable shopping bags. All entries will be exhibited at the Colrain on Canvas Art Show and all entrants will receive a finished tote bag or tee shirt.

The Friends of the Arthur A. Smith Covered Bridge is dedicated to raising awareness of the Bridge and guiding the Town of Colrain in the use of a $25,000 bridge fund. The Friends envision the development of a small park and recreation area on the Town owned land adjacent to the bridge in Lyonsville on the North River. Ms. Norwood's 5th grade class at the Colrain Central School has helped with this project. The students measured the bridge, staked out the boundaries of the surrounding land, studied the way other towns had featured their bridges, and made their own suggestions of how the area could be used.

The Arthur A. Smith Bridge is the last surviving of sixteen documented covered bridges that existed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Colrain and one of only a handful of the 275 covered bridges that once served transportation and commerce in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that exist today. The contest and initial production of tees and totes is underwritten by Friends of the Arthur A. Smith Covered Bridge and Jonathans Sprouts of Rochester, MA, the oldest sprout grower in America, founded in 1976 by the Chair of the Friends group Jonathan Lagreze. Proceeds from the sale of tees and totes will be used by the Colrain Historical Society to reopen their museum of Colrain history at the William G Pitt House.

Design entries and inquiries may be submitted to FriendsofAASmithCoveredBridge@Gmail.com or mailed to 63 Foundry Village Road, Colrain MA 01340. For photos of the bridge, visit Friends of the Arthur A Smith Covered Bridge Facebook page.

Deadline for submissions is May 1st 2020.
