Bridge of Flowers Press Release

Shop for plants from the iconic Bridge garden as well as from local nurseries, plus vendors and more SHELBURNE FALLS — Gardeners and volunteers are busy potting and planning for the Annual Bridge of Flowers Plant Sale, taking place this year on Saturday, May 9 at the corner of Main and Water streets. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. — rain or shine — you’ll find perennial plantings from the iconic Bridge garden as well as annuals, some donated by local nurseries and private gardens. “We are hoping for good weather and a good turnout,” says Plant Sale Chair and Bridge of Flowers Committee Vice Chair Lynda Leitner. “We have vendors, a food booth, beautiful annuals and perennials from A to Z — asters to Zizia aurea — and so many in between. We have many native plants and new varieties of primroses and woodland plants.” “Once again we'll offer a beautiful array of annuals for your pots and window boxes,” adds Bridge of Flowers Committee Chair Annette Szpila. “We are so grateful for Fairview farm and LaSalle Florists and Greenhouses for growing them with such care and attention.” Also featured again this year will be the popular Shelburne Falls Area Women’s Club’s (SFAWC) bake sale offering homemade cookies, muffins, scones, and quick breads as well as coffee and bottled water. The bake sale tent opens at 8:30 a.m. and all proceeds benefit the club’s scholarship fund. The SFAWC, the Bridge of Flowers Committee’s umbrella organization, just celebrated its centennial anniversary and the bridge itself will see that milestone in just a couple of years. Proceeds from plant sales will benefit the bridge for maintenance, upkeep, and more. Vendors this year include Connie Clarke and John Piepul offering honey bees produce from bridge flowers, Davenport’s farm maple products, paintings and cards from Kim Sebrey, locally made sop, dahlia tubers, and ceramics by Kim Easley and Maureen Moore.   After the sale you can continue to support the Bridge by becoming a Friend or a member of the Blossom Brigade, a coterie of volunteers who work with Bridge Head Gardener Carol DeLorenzo and Assistant Gardener Elliston Bingham. Brigade volunteers maintain the Bridge throughout the season — weeding, raking, and keeping the iconic Bridge garden beautiful for visitors from around the world as well as those in the local community.
